Getting the most from trusteeship

Getting the most from trusteeship

Brent Thomas co-founded and runs PrimeTimers, a charity that helps other charities to grow. He has also been a trustee for the Family Welfare Association for the last two years.

“The board at Family Welfare Association wanted me because they specifically required someone with a business background who could help them. I think it’s really important that charities don’t just recruit trustees in their own image, but look to gain new competencies. I was able to offer my experience as HR Director at Castrol, the motor oil company.”

Brent says sitting on a trustee board is absolutely vital for his day job at PrimeTimers. He values what he calls ‘intelligent volunteering’, putting your skills to best use but also getting something in return.

“Being a trustee is like having a hotline to charities’ mindsets - it helps me to understand what is really needed in the sector. I see trusteeship as part of lifelong learning. To me, it’s about a win win situation for all involved.”
