Sharing and gaining skills
38 year old Lucy Caldicott is Head of Fundraising at Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). She is also on the board at Vauxhall City Farm, which has given her a more rounded involvement across the whole running of an organisation, and she has used her fundraising skills regularly.
"The experience I’ve gained as a trustee is invaluable for my role at VSO. At the farm I get involved in strategic and financial planning issues which I have less of a chance to be part of at work.
“Discussions at trustee board meetings can be very varied – from choosing between buying a cow or a sheep, to developing a three year strategy and business plan."

"Alka Prabhakar’s been a trustee with us for sixteen years, bringing her arts marketing experience to the board. This has been invaluable when recruiting paid operational staff like marketing officers; she understands where our greatest needs lie. Alka’s regular job is to bring in audiences for Sheffield’s theatres, and for her to share her experience with us in London adds massive value."
